Spiral Snake

Use a long cardboard tube to make this fun spiral snake. When it’s finished you can wear it on your arm, or hide it around the house to surprise your family!

Stuff Needed:

  • A cardboard tube. (The ones used in kitchen roll are ideal. One tube will make two snakes).
  • Paint or coloured pens to decorate the snake.
  • Scissors.
  • Paper and pens.
  • Glue.

Instructions:

  1. Look closely at your cardboard tube. There should be a line that spirals around the outside. Cut carefully along this line from one end to the other.

  1. Look inside the tube. There should be another line. Cut along this line too until the tube comes apart in two spiral pieces. You can give one to your brother or sister or a friend so they can make a snake too. If the edges are a bit rough, you can trim any rough bits off now to make them neater.
Use the lines on the tubeas a guide for where to cut.
  1. Choose one end of the spiral to be the head. Draw a curved line where you want to cut to make it more head-shaped. Cut along your line.
Mark the end of the tube spiral, then cut it to make the head.
  1. Prepare a space to paint and a space to put the painted snake to dry. The best way to let it dry is by hanging it on a piece of string after painting.

  1. Paint the spiral inside and outside. You can paint it all one colour or decorate it with snake-like patterns. Hang it up to let it dry.
paint the cut tube to bring the spiral snake to life.
  1. Make eyes and a tongue using paper and pens. Cut them out. Snakes have forked tongues!

  1. When the snake’s body is dry, stick on the eyes and tongue with a small amount of glue and press them down hard to make them stick. Add any other decoration if you want to.
Stick the eyes and tongue firmly onto the spiral snake.
