Photocopy relay: an active drawing game.

The object of the Photocopy Relay game is to get people moving but it doesn’t have to be chaotic. Combine observation skills with movement for an active, indoor drawing game. This game is easy to set up and any number of players can join in. All you need is basic drawing ability and a bit of space to move.

Stuff needed:
  • Paper
  • A pen or pencil for each participant (colours may be used if you have them).
Instructions:
  1. Draw a picture, which is reasonably easy to copy, onto a sheet of paper and stick it to the wall or put it on a table in a room where people can see it easily.
  2. Have all participants choose a place to work in a different room and place their paper and pen(s) there.
  3. The object is to copy the first picture as exactly as possible onto your own piece of paper but you’ll need to move between the two different rooms to do it and try to remember the details whist moving. Participants may move as many times as they wish to look at the first picture.
To make it harder:
  • Draw a more complex picture to copy (with more specific details).
  • Add some obstacles or challenges in between the two papers (e.g. when in the hallway, you may only move by hopping / crawling / zig-zagging in and out of a line of teddy bears).
Alternatives:

You could make the initial picture into a model and provide appropriate materials for participants to copy it. For example, you could use Lego© blocks for a 3D Photocopy Relay. You may choose to store the materials (e.g. blocks) in a third location to encourage extra movement.

If your available space is unsuitable for running, provide specific movements that participants must use to get from A to B. For example, everyone must balance a book on their heads while moving, or balance a ping-pong ball on a spoon. This is a fun way to calm down the activity.
